This bug is so frustrating. I really don't want to switch distro's
since it's such a headache installing all my software and configuring
everything. Yet every time Ubuntu upgrades their nvidia drivers or does
anything that touches X my computer becomes unbootable and I have to
install the v. 302.11 beta drivers again. (After going through the very
non-user friendly twice repeated Grub recovery menu.)

I still get this behavior even after running the command

echo "nvidia-current hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections

mentioned above for locking out the driver, and even though I have
uninstalled compiz, since that causes an immediate crash. Basically
compiz no longer works for my gtx 280 card and for now I've given up
hope that it ever will.
