OK, that xlog file was full of failures, so I wondered if it was something to do with my profile. I have made a new one: as root mv /home/bob /home/bob.old cp /etc/skel /home/bob chown bob:bob -R /home/bob
reboot - exactly the same. So it was nothing to do with my profile then. curiously, having done that, there is no .xsession-errors in the new directory. There is a launchpad comment missing with the x log attachment - I wrote a response to the robot about the fact I had been forced to choose a package. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage the GUI is handled by X.org, but I thought I had read that 12.04 and it's new playschool desktop had abandoned X. That response did not survive my attempts to post the attachment, for some reason. But I remain puzzled by what is the graphics environment and what starts it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017377 Title: no GUI after update to 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1017377/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
