Update - I seem to be having good results with Ubuntu 2D shell. I've booted into it several times and the mouse is not locking up. This seems to be a perfectly fine "workaround" and I read up on Ubuntu 2D shell and apparently it requires less computer resources to run so maybe this is the solution for me and my Acer Aspire netbook.
