As written above, I had enabled X Updates as part of investigating
#987056 "Suspend always hangs on Asus N55S, becomes really hot "
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/987056

Issuing the following command:

sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

downgraded the packages to regular Ubuntu:

before
after

2012-06-18 17:15:31 status installed nvidia-current 302.17-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1
2012-06-27 22:02:20 status installed nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1

2012-06-18 17:15:31 status installed nvidia-settings
302.17-0ubuntu1~precise~xup3
2012-06-27 22:02:21 status installed nvidia-settings 295.33-0ubuntu1

2012-05-03 09:18:32 status installed xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.19.0-0ubuntu1~xup1
2012-06-27 22:02:21 status installed xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4

2012-05-21 13:14:17 status installed xdiagnose 2.6
2012-06-27 22:02:21 status installed xdiagnose 2.5
2012-06-28 23:07:22 status installed xdiagnose 2.5.1

With that new set of packages, I've been running the system for a day
with external monitor plugged without seeing the problem again.

** Summary changed:

- Xorg freeze within weeks, but within minutes after plugging external monitor.
+ [X-Updates regression] Xorg freeze within weeks, but within minutes after
plugging external monitor.
