UPDATE:
My two displays work now without error messages. I followed the following
tutorial to install the newest driver from the ATI web site:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Oneiric_Installation_Guide

Then I had the following error message when running fglrxinfo: Error of
failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)...

I found a solution here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/81344/how-to-fix-error-with-ati-driver-error-of-failed-request
It turned out that my fglrx was indeed blacklisted. Commenting out the fglrx
line in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf solved all my problems. I suspect
that this blacklist might have been the trouble from the beginning, resulting
in a spurious error message relating to the virtual screen size. No idea how it
came about, but everything works now as desired and I can activate/deactivate
mirroring without problems.
