Public bug reported:

Screen is black after boot has completed. Entering teminal window (Ctrl
+ Alt + F1) works fine.

Returning to the graphical window (Ctrl + Alt + F7), the upper half og
the scrren is filled with the lower part of the background image and a
split login window while the lower half of the screen is black. The
cursor is responsive and tracks the mousepad. Moving the cursor around
makes more of the background image visible.

Workaround (sort of)): Return to the terminal window, log in and issue:

$ sudo service lightdm stop; sudo service lightdm start

This will restore the expected GUI login window. This workaround fails
after suspend.
