@edgimar: That command doesn't work on my system (command not found),
but "xset dpms force off" does. I'll give that a go next time I hit the
bug. FWIW, to run this from tty1–6, use "sleep 5 ; xset dpms force off
-display :0" and then switch back with ctrl-alt-F7.

@matt-price: I still get this bug (more rarely now), but I had
uninstalled gnome-screensaver (and installed xscreensaver instead), and
never used screen-lock. So perhaps it's not related to either (in my
case at least).
