please install 'evtest' package, and test if you get events from the
kernel:

- log in from a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1)
- sudo -s
- run evtest (with the correct /dev/input/eventID as an argument, you can check 
ID from 'xinput list' from the desktop)
- use the tablet

do you see events passing by? if yes, then the kernel is ok
