I was able to figure out a little more about it.  When I said it wasn't
working before, basically it wouldn't show anything but a blank desktop
after you logged in.  The right click menu still worked, as well as the
settings and stuff from there.

I was finally able to get it back by removing the catalyst drivers following 
the instructions here:
http://ubuntutechnical.wordpress.com/2011/11/20/install-ati-official-drivers-in-ubuntu/

 Then reinstalling the fglrx by running 
sudo apt-get fglrx
