HP Envy 15 3033cl Radeon HD 7690M, same issue. Was working fine with Ubuntu 12.04, did a distro update to 12.10, through the console. During boot it would automatically drop to the console, no GUI whatsoever. Tried re installing from a clean install, like many others here, and have been unable to get it to install correctly.
