I prefer to look at Xorg.0.log, searching for Chipset line. I find it
easier for newer chipsets like GM45 and Q45 wich has a pretty non-
descriptive lspci description.

(--) intel(0): Chipset: "Mobile IntelĀ® GM45 Express Chipset"

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)

Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Tagging for a list of intel
chipsets.

check.

It is normal. I have seen several bug reports lately where there is no
xorg.conf and on my Karmic installation there is none either. You can
see in the beginning of Xorg.0.log that there is no xorg.conf detected
and that it is using a built-in configuration instead.
