Sorry, but I am kind of confused.
Let me see if I get it right:

With the official drivers ( I guess the ones shipped by default with Ubuntu), 
you get:
a) Unity does not load, but you have the windows and you can open a new 
terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T
b) If you write in the terminal:
DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace &
then Unity loads

I don't get where the low-graphics mode is involved
