Same problem here: black screen freeze after boot right before the login
screen.  Ctrl-Alt-F1... do not work.  I am on 12.10 64-bit with Nvidia
proprietary drivers, all recent updates installed.  The problem started
to appear a few days ago.

The workaround is to login through ssh and do 'sudo killall plymouth'.
Login screen appears immediately.
