This behaviour only started to occour when I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 (I
also switched to Cinnamon from Unity, so as not to use the new privacy
invasive Amazon "features"). Other than that, same hardware and
applications.

$ uname -srm
Linux 3.5.0-21-generic x86_64
$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 12.10 \n \l
$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0461:4d15 Primax Electronics, Ltd Dell Optical Mouse

The double clicking behaviour is making the OS unusable, for example, trying to
delete an email in Thunderbird is often resulting in two emails being deleted.
Let me know what else I can do/provide to help resolve this issue.
