oops. forgot a step before the last one: it should have read:

upgraded libgl1-mesa-dri, thereby breaking blender again.

downgrade libdrm-intel1 to karmic

I think downgrading libdrm-intel1 alone might have broken the whole DRI
acceleration so that blender did things in software, but that is just me
guessing.
