The X is screwed up, incorrect display on the screen.  There are four
large  stripes and nothing recognizable when the DM is launched.  However
the splash screen with lubuntu and the four dots does come up correctly.
Immediately after this splash screen, the display is garbled.  Yes, similar
to the bug you mentioned.  The problem was narrowed to
xserver-xorg-video-savage.  The latest version appears to be the problem.
