My guess is the artifacts are related to SNA, rather than to the (false)
lockup.  Please test this by putting the following in your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and then rebooting:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Card0"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Assuming that eliminates the corruption you're seeing, then I think this
bug report is essentially dupe to #1098828
