Offhand this sounds like a "compiz crashed" bug, particularly if you're
finding the issue does not appear with lubuntu or other non-unity
ubuntu's.  If this is true, then you should be able to launch a terminal
window via "<ctrl><alt> t" when the system is showing just the
background.

In any case, since this bug was filed originally against linux, it does
not have the X debugging info.  Please reproduce the problem and then
run 'apport-collect 1076776'.  You may need to ssh into the box while
the system is blank/lockedup/corrupted, so we can see the exact error
state.

If it is compiz crashing, your ~/.xsession-errors may have some more
relevant error message about why compiz crashed.
