Offhand this sounds like a "compiz crashed" bug, particularly if you're finding the issue does not appear with lubuntu or other non-unity ubuntu's. If this is true, then you should be able to launch a terminal window via "<ctrl><alt> t" when the system is showing just the background.
In any case, since this bug was filed originally against linux, it does not have the X debugging info. Please reproduce the problem and then run 'apport-collect 1076776'. You may need to ssh into the box while the system is blank/lockedup/corrupted, so we can see the exact error state. If it is compiz crashing, your ~/.xsession-errors may have some more relevant error message about why compiz crashed. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1076776 Title: 12.10: Default background after logon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1076776/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
