OK, bad news still no good. install of fglrx came back with already there, probrably from when I tried switching over to another driver in #4 above. Re-installed via synaptic and re-booted. No good Purged fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle fglrx and installed amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-linux-x86.x86_64 which I had previously downloaded. Still no good. I have a legacy version, amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64 which I am willing to try.
