I have the same problem after laster upgrade in 12.04 on 2 pc with this configuration:

I tried to disable apport (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/224599), nothing. I tried to use GNOME 3, GNOME no-effect and XFCE4 and they freezed. I tried to update intel driver by external repo, nothing. I think is a problem with video card I have a 3th pc with the same configuratio, but I didn't upgrade it (yet).
