Yeah. The laptop's highest resolution is 1366x768 and the HDTV is the
lower value. What changed is that both could co-exist with the mirrored
display unchecked, but now when the HDMI cable is plugged it the laptop
display acts as if the size is larger than it really is, with no
launcher or bottom dock (Cairo) and my desktop icons just off the left
edge where the launcher normally is.

Unplugging the HTMI cable restores the display as it should be, without
even changing the display settings.

What's needed is separate control of the displays as in (I hate to say
it) Windows.
