I've a similar problem. The cursor continue moving but the screen stop updating.
I can resolve it by ctrl+alt+F3 and lunch "unity --replace &" My dmesg : [10137.632854] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
