FYI, I noticed that if I use the Fn+F4 key on my laptop (which is the
'lower screen brightness' function key) and drop it to 0% (as reported
by a screen brightness overlay in KDE, if I'm logged in), my backlight
goes completely off, to the point that I cannot see anything on the
screen (similar to the problem I have when I boot up without an external
monitor plugged in). Pressing Fn+F5 ('raise screen brightness'), it
comes back on, of course.

So the "echo ### >
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"-in-/etc/rc.local trick
sounds like it will work. I'll test it later today, and report back.
