Public bug reported:

I added:

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restarted lightdm which seems to have given me
some hardware acceleration. It still isn't the same as what the laptop
performs like running Windows 8 however it does make ubuntu usable
again. the laptop is an Acer Aspire S3-391-32364G52add
