I have a few questions and a couple suggestions. First, are you using fglrx, or the open source radeon driver? Would you mind attaching the output of the following "dmesg | egrep 'drm|radeon'" Generally issues like these are caused by broken/misloaded drivers. Also it would be interesting to see if there is a point where the EQ size gets to a point where it can handle the massive quantity of events. grepping radeon should tell if it is the culprit, and if it isn't then a closer look at X should show what the issue is.
