Contra to my earlier "no obvious reason", I think this lockup occurs
when playing HTML5 video in the Firefox browser (I don't have
flashplugin installed).  I don't have experience with other browsers to
compare.  The video starts getting slowed up and then freezes entirely,
along with all graphics, while the audio continues; when the system
unfreezes, typically the multimonitor settings seem to reset, with my
laptop screen mirroring my external display (normally the laptop screen
is disabled), and it is not possible then to alter the multimonitor
settings back to where they were.

I'm running Mir+XMir, but I'm not sure if that's relevant -- will fall
back to plain X and see if this behaviour reproduces itself.
