I am affected by this too. I found that if i reboot with the external display connected both lvds and external display work.
However if i connect the external display after booting with only the lvds screen: then on connection only the external display works. I think this happened recently after the upgrade to driver version 2:2.99.904-0ubuntu1 and then ubuntu2.
