Dominik, that's great! To see which -ati driver has been loaded:
 grep commit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
should return a string where the 8 first characters can be seen in the PPA 
package version.

I wonder if the screen corruption also goes away by just switching to a
console and back (ctrl-alt-F1, alt-F7).
