The same happend to me when upgrading my Kubuntu 13.04 to the released 13.10, which is running in a kvm x86_64 virtual machine.
After I entering my password, an empty splash screen remains. all logs in /var/log/lightdm are empty (exept for the *.old ones) as well as Xorg.0.log.
