Then I followed the guide from the wiki at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touchscreen
(a shame in the first place that you have to do all that manually, even if it
worked) and all I got is a machine that won't boot any more. It shows a black
screen with this error:
could not write bytes: broken pipe.

** Description changed:

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a very old computer that has a
  touchscreen (it's not a notebook, it's an almost-square one-block heavy-
as-shit computer with a built-in touchscreen and no keyboard). The
touchscreen is not working or enabled by default. It should, as it
should on EVERY computer that has a touchscreen.

Before I installed Ubuntu 12.04, there was Ubuntu 7.10 installed on the
same machine and it had the touchscreen working. That means support for
this touchscreen has been enabled for 6 years already. I guess some
additional package had been installed at that time, but nowadays, any
touchscreen should be detected and enabled by default without having to
  install or setup anything.

- I can't even see any settings under System Settings to enable it.
+ And the worst thing is that there isn't any settings under System
+ Settings to enable or configure it.

- Ubuntu's System Settings is so poor. There are tons of settings that
- actually exist that are not available there. You never know whether you
- need to install some additional package or if it is already there to be
- tweaked by editing some text file somewhere.
-
- Some of this shit has already been improved in more recent ubuntu
- versions, but 12.04 is LTS, isn't it? So these fixes should be made
- readily available to 12.04.
