found hint on auto-hide:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/9865/how-can-i-configure-unitys-launcher-auto-hide-behavior
thus went for compiz settings manager...

found things like work around keystrokes noted there... <Alt/Super>, ***
<Alt>F1 ***, <Alt><Tab>, <Alt><Shift><Tab>, ...
(*** => does show the launcher to you even in such a setup)

setting opacity to 1 and hide to never did me a good job for now.
other options like icon size do sound interesting but are not part of the work
around for the topic here.
