Chris, I did update the BIOS to 407 last month after reading the instructions in the Ubuntu documentation that BIOS upgrades are necessary even if a system is stable in Windows, which this system is. The ASUS BIOS update software in Windows was used. I had high hopes the BIOS upgrade might cure this problem, but it persists, though it has diminished. Maybe the upgrade to 3.8.0-35 has helped too. Reverting to 3.8.0-33 gives a stable system.
