While clearly a bug in the X server or the pixman library, I was able to get around it by changing my window manager. It seems that by using a different window manager it avoids the critical path.
In any case, I had this bug consistently as you describe it. Sometimes when I press the down arrow to open the documents list, the X server would crash. Not at first, and not always, but usually after running some time. I could usually get lucky and not crash for the first little while. I was using the openbox window manager, but I also tried fluxbox and Gnome 2. They all had the same problem. I tried switching the video drivers, it did not help. Finally, I switched to the mint cinnamon window manager and it's been working for months for me now. Even though I would prefer not to use cinnamon, it's better than a crashing server. So my suggestion would be to try a new window manager, you might work around it until this is fixed and you can get back to your favorite WM.
