1) Downloaded the latest development release & it worked fine--no black bar 2) Rebooted into 13.10 and after the usual daily software updates the problem has gone away. Clock and calendar disappeared briefly, but that's a different bug & I got it fixed.
Anyway all clear now. Thanks for your help. I would be interested to know more about what was happening & how it was fixed.
