Public bug reported: Been having boot hangs for a couple of months on 14.04. Appears to be a display problem (black screen or hang before logon). Removed "quiet splash" from linux boot command but still occurs. Added only "nomodeset" and the problem appears much less frequently. Noticed poor display response when the system does come up and that the lshw -c display command indicates the "display UNCLAIMED". Have included the lshw output from both the 14.04 and 13.10 levels (13.10 does not have the boot problem, running with "quiet splash" only and display appears normal).
The boot problem was occurring under 14.04 alpha1/2. Rebuilt the system under the beta1 build but problem continued. Will be rebuilding under the latest daily build when a get some time. Saw this notification when opening this bug. Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than hardware rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display 3D graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the problem you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real question may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system. Do not know what steps to take to cause the system to use hardware acceleration.
