Public bug reported: This screen dimming problem has been around Gnome Ubuntu-based distros forever, at least since around 8.x. You can search and see how far back it goes. Today, I am using ArtistX 13.04 and looked for a solution again. It still exists, I see.
The dimming/freezing has no set pattern when the problem will strike, although using a browser frequently exhibits the symptoms. It drove me nuts enough that I gave up on Ubuntu years ago. Apparently, I was able to sent in an xorg report, so I hope that worked for you.
