1.) Do you happen to have bumblebee installed ? Try to remove bumblebee with purge option. sudo apt-get remove --purge bumblebee*
If it is not install check in folder /etc/modprobe.d for file bumblebee.conf. If exists delete it (contains blacklist option for nvidia) rm -f /etc/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf Bumblebee blacklists nvidia driver.
