1) Would using nouveau instead of the nvidia proprietary drivers provide a
WORKAROUND?
2) Would this be reproducible if you changed the mouse model/manufacturer?
3) If you adjusted the version of the drivers as noted in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia would this change
anything?
