My solution only works for Nvidia graphics cards using Nvidia drivers, sorry. Technically, it's a work-around, not a fix.
For those who do use Nvidia drivers but do not have an xorg.conf file, you can generate one with the "nvidia-xconfig" tool run as root or with sudo.
