Otherwise, the computer was hanging with the config file stored in the
/etc/X11/ directory or any subdirectory (xorg.conf.d) under it.  I was
reading about the precedence that xwindows uses when looking for the
config files, does this have something to do also with the time the
config file is loaded and applied to the settings?  This is the only
thing I can think of that would cause this to work for me now.  I'm
using the same file I used in that directory it's just in the
/usrshare/X11/xorg.conf.d directory now.   I feel this bug should have
been addressed in the actual releases by now (since 2010 has been
known).  It was very disconcerting to attempt another install of ubuntu
and have to go through this problem again a year later.
