Public bug reported:

The hardware is a laptop HP Pavilion dm1 that has been running Ubuntu for years.
I tried to upgrade to 14.10 (I had the fglrx driver at that time). The upgrade
went smooothly but when I came back to the login script. I logged in and no
unity panel/dash....

I then reinstalled from scracth to 14.10. So now it is installed with the free
driver but I get exactly the same error.

If I go to CTRL+ALT+F1 I can run any application after exporting my display.

14.04 was working perfectly.
