UPDATE: fixed by removing all the AMD proprietory drivers...
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* I am entirely new to lubuntu, so in reality I have no idea what I did or why it worked, but it did.
