As I recall, there is a way (I don't remember how) to drop back to an 
ordinary terminal display when in the blank black screen condition.

In that mode, I was able to do apt-get commands to un-install the new

xserver-xorg-video-intel

package, re-install the old one, and then lock the version to the old 
level.

I don't remember the particulars of doing it.
