Based on hansie's research, finding that linux kernel 3.19 did not
flicker/blink, I installed kernel 3.19 into Ubuntu 14.04. I followed the
instructions at these sites:
http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2014/12/06/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-14-10-kernel-to-version-3-17-1/
 and
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/02/upgrade-linux-kernel-3-19-ubuntu-14-04/
The flickering ceased and so far everything has run fine. So at this point I
consider the Ubuntu 14.04 problem solved. However, there may still be
problems with 14.10 or other distributions like Xubuntu, etc. I intend to
install Xubuntu on that same computer within the next week, so that will be a
further test on the kernel 3.19 fix. I recommend that you leave the bug open
for a little while and if you hear nothing more, consider kernel 3.19 as the
fix.
It would be nice if something about this problem could be included in
installation notes for 14.04 and 14.10, if this is possible.
