I found the resolution to this bug lies in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-daemon/+bug/1351772 I wonder why the issue is not yet resolved if it is so easy to fix? A new user should ideally get a flawless experience out of the box on newly purchased hardware rather than spend weeks frustrated about simple things. No wonder that Windows rules the market.
