Success!! I simply removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so completely, so X was forced to use a standard frame buffer.
Sound no longer worked, but by removing alsa-base & pulseaudio & reinstalling, I got sound back again. So now I can play videos w/o using the GPU at all! Wooppeee!
