Workaround:

Set the COGL_ATLAS_DEFAULT_BLIT_MODE env var to a value other than
"texture-render", which is the default.

See comment 17 for technical details; the details he lists are
consistent with what I played around with.. disabling 2D acceleration
eliminates the bug but obviously that is not desirable.
