According to my tests backports are needed for 12.04 LTS (Precise) and
14.04 LTS (Trusty).

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 3.2 kernel reports the following:
[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up
   [drm:gen6_sanitize_pm] *ERROR* Power management discrepancy:
GEN6_RP_INTERRUPT_LIMITS expected 18000000, was 12060000
   [drm:gen6_sanitize_pm] *ERROR* Power management discrepancy:
GEN6_RP_INTERRUPT_LIMITS expected 18070000, was 18000000
(I reported bug 1602241 about two last messages)
   [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 3.13 kernel and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS report the following:
[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
  [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is not affected because of newer i915 driver:
  [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20151010

It seems that these error messages are not critical, I can use my laptop
for all tasks.
