I had the same issue trying to use Gazebo along with ROS.

My solution was to downgrade OpenGL from 3.3 to 2.1 as written here:
http://www.mesa3d.org/vmware-guest.html

Info:
* Ubuntu 14.04
* VMware Fusion 8
