Many, many, many thanks!! It worked. I do apologize for checking the security box: I thought it was a security problem because I couldn't get the security updates installed, even though I followed all the instructions given to fix it, repeatedly, over the course of several days -- unfortunately the instructions didn't mention I needed to add "sudo" at the beginning. Anyway, it worked.
I am a 65-year-old grandmother with no formal training at all in computers although I've managed to figure out how to use them over the last 17 years. but I love Ubuntu and really appreciate your very kind assistance.
